2012 Hit By Pitch Rates

After last night's bench clearing brawl between the Dodgers and Padres we decided to take a quick look at MLB's league leaders in 2012 in the "hit by pitch" category. Carlos Quentin (Padres) led MLB batters in 2012 with a HBP Rate of 5% as he was hit 17 times. Gavin Floyd of the White Sox led all MLB pitchers hitting 14 batters with a HBP rate of 1.93%.

I played a lot of baseball as a kid and I led the league one year in getting hit by a pitch. It hurts. I never charged the mound but I didn't like pitchers very much. I remember Minnie Minoso had an answer. When he got a little "chin music" played for him he got back up and dusted himself off and missed the next pitch by at least a foot and the bat went sailing right at the pitchers legs. Minnie looked at his hands and said "Ball slip, bat slip." Minnie didn't have a lot of pitchers throwing at hinm after that.
